Composer – concert works
My electroacoustic works have been presented in the UK (BEAST), Brazil (BIMESP), France (Phonurgia Nova), Australia (ISCM World New Music Days/Aurora Festival), and multiple events and broadcasts in Canada and the USA.
My instrumental concert music increasingly includes interactive and fixed electroacoustic elements, as well as directed improvisation.
At present, the focal point for my concert work is subText, an ensemble and presenting organization that I direct.
Many of my earlier acoustic works were made for the Canadian collective Upstream and its many guests and collaborators. Those include Symphony Nova Scotia (conducted by Peter Lieberson, and by Peter Wiegold), Jerry Granelli, Barry Guy, Conrado del Rosario, Tom Walsh, Jean Derome, Akikazu Nakamura, Michiyo Yagi – and many others.
Please see the Media Kit section for a detailed list of works.
Composer and Sound Designer – dramatic and visual media
My dramatic and media work has included dozens of original scores and sound designs for:
· professional theatres, particularly Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia.
· CBC radio series themes and drama scores.
· film and TV productions by NFB, CBC TV and independent producers.
· TV and Radio commercials.
· multimedia installations in Canadian National Parks.
Please see the Media Kit for detailed credit lists.
Producer – sound recordings
As a media composer and sound designer, I produce most recordings of my work; I also work as an independent record producer.
Please see selected Discography, and credit lists in the Media Kit for further information.
Performer and recording artist
I have performed and recorded many kinds of music in many different contexts—music with invented labels such as avant-garde folk, rockified franco-folklore, prog rock, jazz-rock fusion, country rock, neo-celtic, contemporary concert music, contemporary jazz, avant jazz, collective creation, and orchestral improvisation.
Before establishing subText in 2009, I performed in an annual concert series with the composer-performer collective, Upstream (1990-2000) and with the expanded Upstream Orchestra. I have also performed and recorded internationally with the Paul Cram Orchestra (piano, electronics).
My first solo DVD-A of electroacoustic works, Lieux imaginaires, was released in 2012, on empreintes DIGITALes.
Please see the selected Discography, or listen to some Sounds.
University teacher
I taught and developed classes in electroacoustic music in the Dalhousie University Department of Music (part-time) from 1994 until 2001. In 2004, I began to teach (part-time) in the Acadia University School of Music, where I presently hold an appointment as Adjunct Professor.
Event producer
In 2003, I co-founded the Oscillations Festival of Electroacoustic Music, and continued as its co-Artistic Director until 2013. We produced festivals in 2003, 2005, 2008, and 2012.
I now produce an intermittent concert series, in my role as Artistic Director of subText.
